This issue of a Dance Mag is an invitation to explore states of Flow. How often do we find ourselves in a state of "Flow" when we dance? What obstacles hinder our access to this state? Do states of "Flow" experienced in dance extend to other areas and aspects of life? How does the regular experience of "Flow" impact our personalities, routines, relationships with others, and overall outlook on life?

This edition of a Dance Mag wishes to explore the subtle yet omnipresent relationship that ties dance to structures, be it physical, social, cultural, or political. We want to look at how dance is both informed by these structures and exerts its influence upon them.

Krystel Khoury is a dancer who holds a Master's degree in Performing Arts from Université de Lyon and a Ph.D. in the anthropology of dance and intercultural dynamics from Auvergne Université. She researches embodied knowledge and political discourses, dance education, artistic processes, and anthropological theories.

Since 2019, she has been the head professor of ISAC, Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts, in Brussels. She is also the grants coordinator at Mophradat, a Belgium and Greece-based art organization that supported a Dance Mag during the strenuous year of 2020.

Silvia Sfligiotti is a Graphic Designer based in Milan, a university lecturer and a Contact Improvisation practitioner.

Sara Azzarelli and Silvia met a couple of years ago during a Dance Mag movement workshop facilitated by Sara at the 2019 Milan Book Fair. With the same enthusiasm Silvia danced during the workshop, she's been also following and supporting a Dance Mag since its first issue.

CONVERSATION

The Little Bookshop lives up to its name and shines as a hidden jewel amidst Beirut's chaos. Its signature mustard-yellow steel-gates and honey wooden furniture offer a touch of optimism and warmth in these challenging times. Stinking garbage does tend to pile up along the sidewalks of Hamra neighborhood and electricity cuts are rampant, pollution levels are rising, financial collapse is crippling and street protestors are raging against a criminal government to no avail. It seems there is little to hope for in these deplorable circumstances. Yet, The Little Bookshop is there, quietly tucked in a side-street with its traces of war, reconstruction, graffiti, hopefulness and trauma.

Julia enjoys riding her bike through the streets of her hometown, Stockholm, and writing articles, poems, and short stories. Besides being a writer, Julia is also a communication manager, movement teacher, and a traveler. She's currently studying Existential Public Health and working in communication for WONSA (World Of No Sexual Abuse), a Sweden-based foundation with global ambitions.

Hailing from Syria, born in the US, raised in Saudi Arabia and based in Beirut, though spending a lot of time in Dubai these days too, Zena Takieddine has been an editor and contributing writer with a Dance Mag since 2018. Today, we learn how she manages to find balance while constantly on the move.

Edicola 518 is a landmark newsstand at the heart of Perugia city in Italy. It has been a home for a Dance Mag since 2018. The Emergenze group, which founded the famous kiosk, has also recently opened another fascinating space called Paradise 518, just a mere 30 m away from the Kiosk.

Editorial Note

In the Furor issue of a Dance Mag, Anas Abo Oun wrote about the transformation of the traditional Dabke dance in Palestine. The Dabke, originally an expression of engaging with the land's fertility, sowing and harvesting the earth, arms interlaced and feet pounding, was transformed into an expression of collective defiance against the stealing and appropriation of the land.

Editorial Note

To mark the beginning of aDM's new cycle, this April, we launch an online journal. The journal will follow the magazine's trail out in the world. We will visit places that hosted the magazine, and we will talk with people who, in so many different ways, gave it its character and determination.
